A BIT OF HISTORY

LAURIE'S LANDSCAPING San Diego began in 2021.  We offer full custom design services and complete installation, including hardscape and construction.  We concentrate our work, both commercial and residential, in the central San Diego area, much of it located in the beautiful neighborhoods of Mission Hills, Bankers Hill, Kensington and Mount Helix.

PROFILE: (by Kathleen Stoughton, Mission Hills Garden Club, 2011)  RANDY LAURIE , a third generation landscaper, grew up enjoying his grandfather's majestic 78-acre farm in Youngstown, Ohio.  When Randy was 8 years old, the farm was designated a national historic landmark and is now the remarkable McGuffey  Wildlife Preserve which is owned by the state of Ohio.  When Laurie was a young boy, the farm was complete with livestock, rolling acres of apple and peach trees, berries, and a seemingly endless variety of vegetables and other plants.  Flowers were in abundance, and Laurie recalls that the grandchildren frequently were sent to their nearby homes with colorful bouquets of gladiolas, zinnias and dahlias as well as abundant fruits and vegetables for their families. By the age of ten, Laurie was volunteering at the family's garden center watering plants, creating mixed potted plants and selling Christmas trees in the winter.  Soon, he was working on job sites helping with landscaping and maintenance and assisting with the family's display at the annual county fair.

Laurie's interest in plants continued through college, but he also studied architecture, business, and computer science.  After a successful career as a software engineer in San Diego, he opened Laurie's Landscaping, a full service landscape design and contracting business.  He now has completed more than twelve landscape projects in the Mission Hills area alone, ranging from compact and contemporary to sprawling and historic.

Laurie believes that the most successful garden designs always start with the wishes of the client: "my designs are based on individual likes and dislikes, the unique qualities of the architecture, and the functions we want the landscaping to creatively serve.  My goal is to create a custom garden that will exceed the client's expectations and at the same time be sustainable, low-water, and low maintenance."

Laurie says that he has been privileged to work on several important historic homes in the Mission Hills area:  "Mission Hills remains one of San Diego's oldest and best preserved neighborhoods, largely defined by its special hidden gardens and rich architectural history.  It is especially important that the rehabilitation of a historical property be treated with a particular creative care.  When possible, it is important to reference older drawings and photography in order to preserve the original.  It is imperative that new elements are given careful and sympathetic consideration as to not attack the original, but maintain overall design intent, special relationships, and consistency with regards to materials and workmanship."
