A BIT OF HISTORY

LAURIE'S LANDSCAPING San Diego began in 2021.  We offer full custom design services and complete installation, including hardscape and construction.  We concentrate our work, both commercial and residential, in the central San Diego area, much of it located in the beautiful neighborhoods of Mission Hills, Bankers Hill, Kensington and Mount Helix.

PROFILE: (by Kathleen Stoughton, Mission Hills Garden Club, 2011)  RANDY LAURIE , a third generation landscaper, grew up enjoying his grandfather's majestic 78-acre farm in Youngstown, Ohio.  When Randy was 8 years old, the farm was designated a national historic landmark and is now the remarkable McGuffey  Wildlife Preserve which is owned by the state of Ohio.  When Laurie was a young boy, the farm was complete with livestock, rolling acres of apple and peach trees, berries, and a seemingly endless variety of vegetables and other plants.  Flowers were in abundance, and Laurie recalls that the grandchildren frequently were sent to their nearby homes with colorful bouquets of gladiolas, zinnias and dahlias as well as abundant fruits and vegetables for their families. By the age of ten, Laurie was volunteering at the family's garden center watering plants, creating mixed potted plants and selling Christmas trees in the winter.  Soon, he was working on job sites helping with landscaping and maintenance and assisting with the family's display at the annual county fair.

Laurie's interest in plants continued through college, but he also studied architecture, business, and computer science.  After a successful career as a software engineer in San Diego, he opened Laurie's Landscaping, a full service landscape design and contracting business.  He now has completed more than twelve landscape projects in the Mission Hills area alone, ranging from compact and contemporary to sprawling and historic.

Laurie believes that the most successful garden designs always start with the wishes of the client: "my designs are based on individual likes and dislikes, the unique qualities of the architecture, and the functions we want the landscaping to creatively serve.  My goal is to create a custom garden that will exceed the client's expectations and at the same time be sustainable, low-water, and low maintenance."

Laurie says that he has been privileged to work on several important historic homes in the Mission Hills area:  "Mission Hills remains one of San Diego's oldest and best preserved neighborhoods, largely defined by its special hidden gardens and rich architectural history.  It is especially important that the rehabilitation of a historical property be treated with a particular creative care.  When possible, it is important to reference older drawings and photography in order to preserve the original.  It is imperative that new elements are given careful and sympathetic consideration as to not attack the original, but maintain overall design intent, special relationships, and consistency with regards to materials and workmanship."

"Randy designed and oversaw a total re-make of our back yard.  We could not have been more pleased with the result.  Randy is creative, meticulous, dedicated, thorough, reliable, and most importantly, he is a delight to deal with... "Randy has an amazing ability to envision the end product... While undertaking my project, original historic walls were discovered that dictated a project far exceeding our original intent.  His patience and willingness to consider costs, as well as my personal input was exceptional, as was his attention to detail and follow-through on commitments.  His enthusiasm for the history and dedication to preserving it guided us to a beautiful result..."

"Every day we look at the beautiful work you and your team did we are grateful that we found you... You've made our house so much more inviting... We can't thank you enough for your artistry, patience, and hard work."

JC & AC

"Our canyon project was a mammoth undertaking and required more than three years to complete. Throughout that period Randy was the consummate professional. He listened to what we wanted and then presented a detailed plan. He was s stickler for detail and his work was always of the highest quality, on time, and on budget. Five years after the completion of our canyon we still count on Randy as a close friend and continually ask for his thoughts and expertise.  He has our most sincere respect and our highest recommendation."

GD & BD

'Randy provides the highest level of customer service we've ever experienced.  We knew we were in good hands the moment we had our first consultation.  From that meeting he knew exactly what our 89-year-old Mission Hills home needed to shine.  From plant material, hardscape, irrigation and lighting, we knew we were getting something special and extraordinary.  He understands architecture and horticulture so well that he masterfully joins the two.  We enjoyed his crews, the craftsmanship was exceptional and Randy's attention to detail unsurpassed.  He is a true professional and perfectionist!  Even two months after the project was compete he still stops by to check on irrigation and plant condition.  We love our home and are very grateful to Randy for designing such a beautiful environment we will enjoy forever, because we're never moving!"

RM & RM

"The Japanese Garden that you designed and installed for us is even more beautiful than we imagined it would be.  You and your staff did an outstanding job... you worked hard, you worked fast, you were always on time.  It has been a pleasure working with you."

LH & BH

"The most impressive thing about Randy and his crew was how organized and methodical they were... The final project was exactly as we expected.  No surprises.  He was so easy to work with..."

BB & ES

"From the original design concept to installation and project completion Randy listened to us and was engaged in our project.  Randy incorporated our vision with his landscape expertise and the end result has been a rewarding and satisfying experience.  Our project reflects our lifestyle and fits with the architectural language of our home and our historical neighborhood.  Our ultimate goal was to have the project look like it was conceived and installed when the house was built over 80 years ago while reflecting current tastes and environmental standards.  Now that we are living in the new space we absolutely love it.  Thank you Randy!"

TD

"You did an outstanding job at creating a complete front and back yard design based on our priorities, preferences, and within the approved budget.  You then completed the job in a timely manner, and we appreciate your hands-on approach and oversight of the project.  We wouldn't hesitate to recommend you to anyone... and we have.  Thanks for a job well done."
